The "Sweet Shop" on Tompkins Square Park

In 1967, this establishment operated on the west side of First Avenue, and was to my midwestern eyes an exact replica of someplace Leo Gorcey, Huntz Hall, and the rest of the Dead-End Kids hung out. They had a soda fountain, some booths, made their own candy, and served a panoply of hot and cold sandwiches, the supreme of which was The Number Eight. Triple-decker, a grilled cheese with bacon and tomato on the foundation, topped by a peanut-butter and lettuce layer. I had one or two a week before i found Katz's on Houston street, and from then it was mostly brisket on club with slaw on the sandwich.
